Summer Read

Our Summer read is the Millenium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets). Jane will be hosting amovie evening in September when we will see the Swedish subtitled film of the first book. The Waterstone's synopsis for the first book reads : Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder - and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, truculent computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves. Enjoy!

I LOVED this book (although was very worried about some of the horrifically graphic events that happen in it!) and Lisbeth and Mikael are true heroes!
Already peeking through my fingers at the pages of the next novel!

Well, the Millennium Trilogy certainly sparked off some chat! I think it was agreed that Lisbeth can handle herself (even though she lets her friends down ie Mimmi and, oh yes, I forgot about her guardian who had the stroke and she assumed would die so left without a backwards glance! I suppose she was very attentive with him once she realises months later that he survived but it's not how a good friend would behave. More like a rat deserting a sinking ship so she saves herself the trauma of seeing a friend in trouble - not really the sort of friend you'd want methinks.)

Mikael seems popular with the majority although is a bit of a wally really. Obviously hugely handsome and charismatic but probably has more in his trousers than up top. Please feel free to disagree!

The story on the whole had most of us gripped but I did feel emotionally exhausted after the first one and sort of hobbled, wounded and tired into the second one. The proverbial straw was Lisbeth setting up Mimmi and I will probably accidentally drive over my copy several more times before binning it (I forgot to show you all the tyre marks!)

Anyway, comment on the blog at your heart's desire or just hit 'reply all' to this email and let us all know what you think!
