Just finished this book and LOVED it! All the characters are vivid and real and so funny! I even liked the beastly Valentina and thought she had a nasty trick up her sleeve (like burning Nikolai's masterpiece!) but it all worked out for the best in the end.
Even the disturbing snippets about the Ukrain are poignant and definitely food for thought!

In “Tractors” we meet a family. Nikolai (the recently widowed father), Vera (big sister – money & image loving), Nadia (little sister – just & fair?), Valentina (father stealer, immigrant, loose woman, proud mother), Stanislav (easy going son/stepson) and a string of men… (all hungering after the romantic attentions of Valentina!).

The book is stereotypical just like a “carry on” film! It brushes neatly over the areas of growing old, sibling rivalry, ambition, kindness, cunning and love. Lewycka’s style is very readable, not always believable but maybe somehow incredibly possible! Whilst we may not have to rescue our parents from ill matched liaisons in later life there are elements contained in this book that we will all have to face. And if we face them with some of the humour contained in these pages maybe we can cling on to our sanity in this crazy world!
